Harman Kardon DPR 1001 Digital Receiver

Harman Kardon DPR 1001 Digital Receiver Review

I just purchased this receiver less than a week ago and I am amazed at the value and apparent quality of the piece, especially considering the currently discounted price. The sound is clean, and answering to perhaps one of my biggest concerns, 50 digital watts per channel is more than adequate for a basic home theatre/stereo system. It blows my 80 watt, 2-channel analog (piece of junk) JVC amp out of the water! I am so happy I bought this receiver!

As other reviewers have noted, the sound is clean, perhaps "too clean" for some audiophiles, however I play reggae, trance, and rock music, loud, and it sounds great! There is adequate bass, and I suspect the addition of a powered subwoofer will take it over the top - that is next on my list.

I suspect that some users who wrote reviews did not have the desire or patience to work through the somewhat laborious set-up required to optimize the sound. While the setup requires a somewhat sizeable time commitment, once you finish it is unlikely that you will ever have to deal with it again, at least until you make a change to your system. It is worth it because an accurate setup results in the cleanest sound I have ever heard, no matter what the source (DVD, CD, PC, TV/Cable, Laptop, Tape, Tuner, etc...I have all 7 of these sources hooked up). 6 of the inputs have connections on the back, while the seventh is made through the jacks on the front of the machine.

I think the biggest asset this receiver brings to the table, besides the crystal-clear sound, is the fact that each of the digital inputs can be mapped and assigned to any number of the seven available sources. There are more than enough digital inputs (3 coax, 3 optical) and outputs (1 dedicated coax, one dedicated optical), owing in part to the fact that one set of input jacks can be reversed from their default setting to become outputs - leaving you with two digital ins, and two digital outs (both coax and optical).

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT, esp. for 0, there is no better value anywhere! And in the words of another reviewer, "This is the best purchase I have ever maid!!!" I recommend that reviewer purchase spell check next!

Harman Kardon DPR 1001 Digital Receiver Overview

Once again, Harman Kardon breaks the rules and sets a new standard for advanced technology. This time Harman Kardon has leapfrogged conventional technology to create the first true digital path A/V receiver. Simply put, the audio signal remains digital all the way from the disc through to the digital amplifiers. This unique, all-digital approach results in a dramatically smaller form factor, much cooler operating temperatures, enhanced reliability, and flexibility in output assignment.

Harman Kardon DPR 1001 Digital Receiver Specifications

The 7.1-channel DPR 1001 digital path receiver features a full digital-signal path from input to output, combining high-power output, convenience, and leading-edge performance with a sleek, high-tech appearance. Winner of a CEA Innovations 2003 Design and Engineering Award, the 7.1-channel DPR 1001 delivers 50 watts into each of its seven main channels. It's also compatible with all popular 7.1, 6.1, and 5.1-channel surround decoding formats, as well as with all high-resolution video and audio formats and display devices, thanks to its wide-bandwidth HDTV- and DTV-compatible component-video switching, multichannel analog-audio inputs, and detailed bass management.

The DPR 1001's versatile setup and configuration options include independent multiroom-multisource operation and a comprehensive array of rear-panel and front-panel digital and analog video and audio connections. The receiver comes with Harman Kardon's programmed LCD remote control with EzSet functionality, plus a Zone II remote for control of a second-room audio system. The receiver uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) digital amplifier technology--which keeps digital-audio signals in the digital domain from input to the last stage of output--to achieve significant advantages in performance and physical design.

Harman Kardon's Triple-Crossover Bass Manager is among the most advanced bass-management systems available in any audio-video receiver or DVD player. This system lets you select from three bass-crossover frequencies for the front, center, and surround speakers to perfectly tailor the audio output fed to each set of speakers for optimal frequency response and performance. This compensates for the absence of bass management on many high-resolution optical players (like DVD-Audio or multichannel SACD players), making it easy to enjoy maximal sonic benefits from high-resolution formats. Advanced 24-bit, 192 kHz D/A converters ensure the highest possible resolution, fidelity, and dynamic range. Two proprietary Harman audio technologies, Logic 7 7.1/5.1 and VMAx, deliver heightened sonic realism from surround sound and stereo audio source material. When the unit's connected to a computer or sound card with a compatible coaxial digital-audio output, you can play back MP3-encoded CDs or Internet-delivered streaming media.

The unit's audio-video connections includes composite video, S-Video, and wide-bandwidth component video switching, plus a wide-bandwidth component-video output, which passes the full bandwidth of HDTV signals. Digital and analog front-panel jacks accommodate program sources such as game consoles, VCRs, camcorders, digital still cameras, and portable audio-video products. Exclusive to Harman Kardon products, the front-panel coaxial digital audio and analog audio-video jacks may be switched to function as record outputs for easy connection to portable recording devices.

Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black)

Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black) Review

This 7.1 sound system is an excellent choice for under 0. We wanted to update our old Sony 5.1 system (still rocks downstairs in the man cave) after purchasing a new tv as the Sony lacked HDMI connections and other modern updates. The sound system I really wanted (Denon receiver, Polk or Klipsch speakers and Polk sub-woofer) was running way over budget. Onkyo was suggested as a solid brand and while searching their receivers, I ran across this system. Looked like a great deal (I purchased direct) and I eagerly awaited its arrival.

This box was huge(!) and was too heavy for me to even attempt carrying. I opened it up on my front steps and carried several items in (2 levels) before I could carry the entire box inside. Everything is packaged tight and well insulated. Now that I had all the items laid out on my living room floor, I was a little daunted by all the components involved but the easy-to-follow quick installation guide made it look do-able. The included wires are all color coded which made it even easier. The back of the receiver has screw in connections for the speaker wires but the speaker backs have the lower end clip attachment. Hmmm. 45 minutes later, mission accomplished.

There are 8 connections available for this receiver: (1) dvd, (2) vcr/dvr, (3) CBL/SAT, (4) AUX, (5) TV/Tape, (6) tuner, (7) cd and (8) port. There are 4 HDMI connections in and 1 HDMI going out. We keep it in an enclosed wooden entertainment center with 3" clearance on top and glass window pane doors. It runs a little warm but nothing worrisome. The three front speakers are large which makes the center one beneath my flat screen tv look too bulky. I am not a fan! and this contributed to my 4 star rating. The 4 remaining speakers are smaller and bookshelf ready. Another little pick is the sub-woofer only has a volume control in back. I would have liked a tone control as well. The speakers and sub-woofer together perform beautifully! Usually, I keep the volume in the 30s. When turned up past 65, we are talking eardrum thumping loud. This system has not distorted even when played this loud, noting that I have not ventured past 73. One last point, my husband fiddled with the connections to allow us use of the tv without having to turn this system on. This means the sound for straight television viewing is through our tv's speakers (ugh) but it does away with the need for turning on this system just to watch tv (our babysitting Nana would never figure out the extra remote). The sub-woofer stays on all the time but investing in an efficient power strip Smart Strip LCG4 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology and Fax/Modem Surge Protection helps.

We had a basic LG blu-ray player connected but recently purchased an upgraded Onkyo version which works smoothly with this system. It makes for an amazing movie experience.

FM radio requires tricky placement for the wire antenna included but this can be easily upgraded. We get several stations but then I live in the NYC area. The customization for set stations is nice.

We kept our old Sony 5 disc cd system and the remote works just fine. I really love that they include an ipod dock. It's great to just slip my nano onto the dock and it have it charge at the same time. The remote does not work for the docked ipod but this is not that big a deal for me.

Bottom line, we love it! I think it is a great bargain at under 0 and I am very pleased with the level of performance. The Onkyo 5200 was ranked #1 by Consumer Reports as the best under 0 system only to be pushed to the #2 spot by the Onkyo 7200. You will not regret purchasing this system.
